Both perceive a mismatch between the critical theory being developed during the 1930s in the discussions of the Institute, and in its journal, and the two men now in charge. Extracts from older writings by both were copied and pasted up on posters, or distributed in 32 AGAINST AUTHENTICITY leaflets: an exercise in immanent critique, perhaps, in which onlookers were invited to measure the truth of the two men's actions against their earlier ideas. Both the students and the younger generation of the Frankfurt School scholars wished to turn back the clock, and to reverse Adorno and Horkheimer's intellectual development.
On 31 January 1969, 76 students were arrested when Adorno called the police to the offices of the Institute for Social Research. 23 What is striking is the degree to which the radical students of the era share this evaluation with Adorno and Horkheimer's intellectual heirs. Both perceive a mismatch between the critical theory being developed during the 1930s in the discussions of the Institute, and in its journal, and the two men now in charge. That this realization is what enabled the political interventions of Horkheimer and Adorno seems to have escaped everyone's notice. It is in fact arguable whether there was ever a central core of ideas which could be labelled 'critical theory'. Agnes Heller has argued that 'the resurrection of the Frankfurt School as a school came in the sixties, with the reemergence of a cause, or rather of several causes. 24 The implication is that this was largely political myth-making. The reanimation of the Frankfurt School was more like the conjuring of a ghost; not just a reminder of a past that Horkheimer in particular, whose radical rhetoric had been more shrill, wished to put behind him, but the invention of a comprehensive theoretical position which had never existed.
