3 This statement does not imply any oppositional view of the relation between phenomenology and cognitive science. On the one hand, cognitive science needs a phenomenological interpretation of its physiological and computational hypotheses. ), the intentionality of experience (which always consists of the two closely related poles of the subject and the intended object), and the temporality of experience. We conclude this section with a brief comment on temporality. We are aware of its constant flux.

How does a uniform synthetic experience of something come into being? We know from cognitive psychology that experience is the final result of complicated processes. However, information processing accounts of experience start with "data" rather than with experience itself. As we have already pointed out, the phenomenologist's ultimate bedrock is experience. Unlike the cognitive psychologist, the phenomenologist does not even attempt to explain experience in non-experiential terms. However, phenomenologists can go further than merely asserting (and describing in detail) that experience is synthetic and unified.

In my view, the ultimate framework within which empirical results and theoretical constructs can be evaluated remains the personal encounter with the patient over time. We have no safer grounds. And that is it what we can learn from the old boys.
